In this practice-oriented course, high school teachers will explore how to adapt grammar instruction to meet their students’ needs. They will also focus on integrating grammar instruction with teaching language skills, learn about task-based grammar, and evaluate different error correction strategies. Participants will discuss challenges their learners may have with learning grammar and discover how they can adapt grammar instruction to improve students’ fluency and accuracy.

Learning Objectives and Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to…

  • understand key issues concerning grammar acquisition;
  • incorporate effective approaches and techniques of presenting and practicing grammar into your regular teaching;
  • plan communicative grammar lessons for mixed ability classes;
  • self-assess and improve your grammar lessons;
  • give effective feedback to students.

MOOC “Teaching Grammar Communicatively” is available for everyone with no charge on the Canvas platform. This program will be enriched by the guidance of the English Language Specialist (ELSpec) Miralynn Faigao Malupa, who will guide teachers through this MOOC on the Canvas learning platform. The ELSpec is expected to conduct online workshops refreshing the participants' learning each week, giving them more practical techniques and strategies, and answer any questions that participants may have about the content through a live session each week. The Specialist will also help the teachers through problematic issues they may find in the MOOC. The organizers will strive to build a network among the participants and organizers.

Certificates: At the conclusion of the program the participants will receive certificates with details of the completed program. Only those who complete all program tasks and attend 80% of meetings will be presented with certificates.

Dates and Time: The ELSpec will hold weekly meetings, walking a closed group of participants through the MOOC. The course will be 7 weeks long ( week 1 – opening and orientation, weeks 2-6 work on course modules, week 7 – closing and evaluation). The Live meetings and the MOOC will add about 4 hours of work a week to your schedule.

The program will start on March 22 and conclude May 10. The days and times of the meetings will be confirmed once the program participants are selected. Teachers selected to participate in the program will be notified on Thursday March 18. The first meeting is scheduled for Monday March 22.

Participation: The program has been designed for a group of 25 teachers from Poland and from neighboring countries.

Bio of Miralynn Faigao Malupa

Miralynn Faigao Malupa is the English Language Specialist sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for this project. She has been in the TESOL field for 25 years. She has a Doctorate and Master’s in Education with TESOL concentration. Her research interests include teacher education (focusing on teacher discourse, grammar pedagogy, and reflective teaching), assessment, and online curriculum design. She has taught in a variety of ESL and EFL teaching contexts, including academic and government institutions. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Westcliff University in Irvine, California, USA.
